It’s that time of year and the carnival has come to town. I loaded my kids up and away we went. The lines were terribly long this year and it seemed everything we wanted to do meant we had to wait 15 - 20 minutes before we could begin. A great time was had by all of us though, so I guess it was worth the wait.
IT was at the carnival that I noticed that my family, being all white, stood out amongst the crowd of nearly all Hispanics. I know that I live in an area where migrant workers come, but Washington State seems a long way from Mexico and I just have to wonder how it came to be that 98% of the people I am surrounded by are Mexican?
I have to admit I didn’t notice it at first. We were probably there for an hour when I spotted someone with blonde hair and noticed how much she stood out from the rest of the crowd. That’s when it hit me that among the 500 people in eye sight at that very moment there was only one other family that was white at the carnival.
I guess if you live in Southern California you would expect this, but Washington state is about as far north as it gets. From what I read online the Hispanic population in the USA is growing at such a fast pace that within the next decade it will become the majority.
So what I am asking is, do we white people get to register as a minority soon? Will Spanish become the most used language? Will Corn and burritos displace apple pie?
My oh my - how the world is changing.
